When to Be in Miami and Where to Eat When You're Here: Neighborhood by Neighborhood

I grew up in the Cayman Islands, a little over an hour's flight south, and Miami was my way into the United States. Every trip off the island started or ended here, and the city grew on me one visit at a time. People thinking about buying in Miami tend to ask two things before they ask about a floor plan: Where should we eat, and what is worth planning a visit around? This guide answers both, neighborhood by neighborhood, with the newly constructed towers that sit closest to each table.

Where should you eat in South of Fifth and South Beach?

Two palm trees lit from below against a night sky, framed by bougainvillea, with a lit residential tower behind them.
Palms and bougainvillea at night, South of Fifth.

South of Fifth is the most walkable corner of Miami Beach and a natural place to start. At Call Me Gaby on Washington Avenue, order the niçoise, the bucatini cacio e pepe and the Andrea pinsa. The pinsa comes with fig jam, stracciatella and speck. Joe's Stone Crab, serving Miami Beach since 1913, is a few steps away. The Savoy on Ocean Drive and Five Park on Alton Road are both an easy walk from either table.

Motek is at 100 Collins Avenue at the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Motek South of Fifth's inviting patio sits under a lantern-lit tree. Start with the spicy Greek feta, baba ganoush and za'atar dips, then the harissa spare ribs and crispy chicken schnitzel, with handcut fries on the side.

A few blocks north, on the bay side of South Beach, chef-owner Michael Pirolo runs Macchialina at 810 Alton Road. At Macchialina, the bar is the seat to get. Order the insalata tricolore and the cavatelli Macchialina. For a quieter dinner, there is also a garden patio under string lights.

Next door, in Macchialina's original space at 820 Alton Road, Stormy Monday is a 55-seat cocktail bar from James MacInnes. Chef Seth Blumenthal handles the bar food. Order the Sidewalk Spritz, made with aperitivo, orange, tomate de árbol and carbonated Chablis. It's a seasonal drink, and it's the best spritz I've had. 824 Alton Road is planned for the same block.

Pamplemousse on the Bay, at 10th Street and West Avenue, is one of the few restaurants along West Avenue where you eat right on the water. 1250 West Avenue is a short walk up the same street.

Further north in Sunset Harbour, BeyBey at 1330 18th Street cooks almost everything over charcoal and wood. Founder Tiger Saliba, who came to Miami from Beirut, named it for Beyte Beytak, a Lebanese phrase of welcome to a guest. Chef Roberto Solís of Huniik in Mérida leads the kitchen with chef de cuisine Geoff Lee, pairing Lebanese mashawi with Yucatecan smoke cooking. Order the kibbeh steak tartare, the charred octopus and the 24-hour short rib with tortillas. It is an easy place to love, at a table inside or out on the patio. The proposed Reserve at One Sunset would sit a few blocks away on Alton Road.

Casa Tua, on James Avenue just off Collins, is classic fine Italian from the brand behind ORA by Casa Tua in Brickell. Within two or three blocks are The Ritz-Carlton Residences, South Beach, Rosewood Residences Miami Beach and Shore Club Private Collection.

Where is the best place to watch the sunset?

An empty table with a white cloth and wicker chairs on the rocks under a sea grape tree, with the sun setting over Government Cut and the downtown skyline behind.
A waterfront table at Smith & Wollensky, South Pointe.

Smith & Wollensky sits at 1 Washington Avenue in South Pointe Park at the southern tip of Miami Beach. It looks out over Government Cut and the downtown skyline, and it has arguably the best outdoor seating in the city. The patio is first-come, first-served, since reservations are for indoor tables. Arrive well before sunset to get a seat outside. Cruise ships often head out through the channel while you eat. The Savoy and the rest of South of Fifth are a short walk away.

Where should you eat in Mid-Beach, Surfside and Sunny Isles?

At Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann in the Faena Hotel, order the wood-fired roasted chicken salad at lunch. Mid-Beach is quieter than South Beach, and Aman Residences Miami Beach and Casa Cipriani Miami Beach are both a short walk up Collins Avenue from the Faena.

For a special occasion worth dressing up for, The Surf Club Restaurant by Thomas Keller in Surfside is the place. In the same Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Champagne Bar at The Surf Club pours one of the largest champagne and wine selections in Florida. The palm-fringed lounge opens daily from mid-afternoon and takes no reservations. In 2026, Food & Wine's Global Tastemakers Awards named it the best hotel bar in the US. Surf House at The Surf Club and Seaway North at The Surf Club sit on either side of it. Ocean House Surfside is a few blocks north, toward Bal Harbour.

Further north, Avra at the Estates at Acqualina in Sunny Isles Beach is known for grilled fish and Greek dishes. Bentley Residences and St. Regis Residences Sunny Isles Beach are a short walk further up Collins.

Where should you eat in Brickell, Edgewater and the Design District?

For French food in Brickell, book LPM on Brickell Bay Drive, where the menu leans French Mediterranean. Start with the Tomatini, which the bar menu calls the essence of LPM in a martini glass.

At COTE in the Design District, the Butcher's Feast is the order. Jean-Georges Miami Tropic Residences and Miami Design Residences by Fouquet's are both within a few blocks.

Back in Brickell, Casa Tua Cucina is the casual option, an Italian food hall and market inside Saks at Brickell City Centre. ORA by Casa Tua, The Residences at 1428 Brickell and Cipriani Residences Brickell are all within a few blocks.

Where should you eat in Wynwood?

Pastis at 380 NW 26th Street is the Miami outpost of a Parisian-style brasserie from New York. Keith McNally opened the original in 1999 and runs it with Stephen Starr. The Miami location opened in Wynwood in April 2023, and it holds its own against the New York original. Order the steak frites, and either the New York strip with maître d'hôtel butter or the filet with sauce au poivre. Before that, share the crispy artichokes and the escargots in garlic-parsley butter.

A few blocks south, Rishtedar at 232 NW 24th Street is the first US location of an Indian restaurant group that Vikram Thadani founded in Santiago, Chile, in 2007. It opened in 2023, and the kitchen is staffed by chefs brought over from India. The dining room is hung with colored lanterns, and guests are offered a bindi on arrival. The cuisine is fantastic, and the welcome is part of the meal. Order the butter chicken, the paneer tikka and the dal makhani, with garlic naan on the side. Dinner ends with a finger bowl of lemon, cardamom and rose water. NoMad Residences Wynwood is a few blocks north, and The Rider Residences is about a mile east.

Which restaurants are worth the drive?

Sunny's Steakhouse in Little River, about ten minutes north of the Design District, is a proper steakhouse done well. When I want a steak, it's the only one I consider.

Nearby, San Lorenzo sits on the Little River waterfront at 620 NE 78th Street, with authentic Italian food and genuinely warm hospitality. There is no printed menu. You choose meat or fish, and the kitchen takes it from there.

Good Thai is hard to find in Miami, and Lung Yai Thai Tapas in Little Havana, a short drive west of Brickell, gets it right. Hillstone on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables is reliable across the whole menu. Ponce Park and The Village at Coral Gables are a few minutes away.

When is Miami season, and when should you visit?

The season most people picture runs from about November to April, the dry months, with warm days and cooler evenings. This is how the 2026-27 calendar lines up, using dates the organizers have published.

Fall: October and November

Stone crab season opens on October 15, and Joe's is full again. The Miami Heat and the Miami Dolphins are in season. In November the Miami Book Fair takes over Miami Dade College downtown, a short walk from Delano Residences Miami and Waldorf Astoria Residences. By Thanksgiving, the winter residents are back.

Winter: December to February

Art Basel Miami Beach opens the season in early December at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Design Miami runs alongside it, with a week of satellite fairs, gallery dinners and parties across the city. Owners at Shore Club Private Collection or Rosewood Residences can walk to the fair. February brings the Boat Show, which spreads from the Convention Center to Watson Island, home to the planned Watson Island residences, and to Collins Avenue in Mid-Beach. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival fills South Bayshore Drive, right outside Four Seasons Private Residences Coconut Grove. The South Beach Wine & Food Festival closes the month with four days of tastings and dinners.

Spring: March to May

March is music and tennis. Miami Music Week fills hotels and clubs in the days leading up to Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park. The Miami Open is played at Hard Rock Stadium through the second half of the month. If you are looking at a tower facing Bayfront Park, Ultra weekend is on your doorstep, which some owners love and others plan a trip out of the city around. The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix follows from April 30 to May 2. Miami Swim Week comes at the end of May or the start of June.

What do residents do in Miami in summer?

Summer is hot, humid and green, with afternoon storms that usually pass within the hour, and it has more going on than most people expect. It's when residents get the city to themselves, and plenty of them stay rather than spending it in Europe.

During Miami Spa Months in July and August, resort and hotel spas offer treatments at set prices. Miami Spice follows in August and September with prix-fixe menus. In 2026 it drew a record 400-plus restaurants and was extended through October. COTE, LPM, Macchialina, Los Fuegos, Avra and San Lorenzo were all on the 2026 list. Many owners watch the Fourth of July fireworks over Biscayne Bay from the water, and boaters look forward to the two-day lobster mini-season in late July. Restaurants are easier to book, and the ocean is warm enough to swim in every day.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If you plan to spend summers here, that's one more reason to look at new towers, which in Miami-Dade are built to the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone code, with impact-rated windows and doors.

What does this tell you about where to buy?

Where you like to spend an evening usually says more about the right neighborhood than a floor plan does. If you want to walk to dinner most nights, start with South of Fifth or Brickell. If you want a quiet beach and one great dinner a week, look at Surfside or Mid-Beach. If you want bay views with the Design District's kitchens a few minutes away, look at Edgewater. You can see every tower in this guide on the map or browse all properties.
